There was a quiet theme running through everything I read this week:

The body keeps receipts.

Here are four things that caught my eye this week….

Could the gut be influencing endometriosis?

A new study found that gut bacteria may play a role in how endometriosis grows. This is either great news or deeply unfair, depending on how you feel about your gut already having a say in everything else.

Researchers gave mice with endometriosis gut bacteria from either healthy women or women with endometriosis. The mice receiving bacteria from healthy donors developed much smaller lesions, while those given bacteria from women with endometriosis saw their lesions grow larger. Same condition, very different outcomes, depending entirely on the microbial company they kept.

The researchers think acetate, a substance produced by healthy gut bacteria, may have helped the immune system slow the growth of the lesions.

This is early research, but it is an exciting starting point.

The study was carried out in mice using samples from just eight women, so more research is needed before we know whether this could translate into a treatment for people.

Still, it gives researchers a promising new direction and suggests that the connection between the gut, the immune system and endometriosis may be more important than we realised.

TLDR: Swap the gut bacteria, change the outcome… at least in mice. Healthy-donor bacteria shrank lesions; donor bacteria from women with endometriosis grew them. Early days, but a genuinely promising lead.

Grip strength remains suspiciously informative

Grip strength may be the least exciting test in medicine.

Yet it keeps predicting outcomes that seem far more important than the strength of your hands.

A meta-analysis of 42 prospective studies included more than three million people and found that lower grip strength was associated with a higher risk of death from any cause and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

For every 5kg decrease in grip strength, the researchers found a 16% higher risk of all-cause mortality and a 21% higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

So could buying a grip trainer allow you to squeeze your way toward immortality? Unlikely. However, you can use grip strength as a quick proxy for broader muscular strength, physical function, nutritional status and how well the body is tolerating the ageing process.

It is cheap, fast and surprisingly honest…. basically the opposite of a smartwatch.

For women, muscle loss can accelerate with ageing, inactivity and hormonal change, yet strength is still often discussed as a fitness goal rather than a health marker.

Preserving strength is becoming increasingly difficult to dismiss as optional.

TLDR: Your handshake might know something your doctor doesn’t. Grip strength is a remarkably useful snapshot of overall physical resilience, and a good reason to stop treating strength training as optional.

Can your wearable predict preterm birth?

A study of 241 pregnancies found that maternal heart rate variability, or HRV, tended to change around seven weeks before birth. Turns out your watch might know you’re about to go into labour before you do.

In women who delivered early, that shift also happened earlier.

This raises an exciting possibility: wearable data could one day help identify pregnancies that need closer monitoring before other warning signs appear.

The study was still small, with only 21 preterm births, so more research is needed before HRV can be used to predict labour for an individual woman.

But as an early signal, it could potentially be used as a promising indicator.

TLDR: Your heart rate may be counting down before you are. It’s not ready to replace your midwife yet, but it’s a promising signal that pregnancy monitoring could get smarter.

One week, less plastic, surprisingly big changes

An Australian study has found that reducing plastic contact around food can change the levels of certain plastic-related chemicals in the body in just one week…. no detox tea required.

After just seven days of eating food with fewer plastic touchpoints, some plastic-related chemicals in urine dropped by around 40% to 60%.

Food seemed to make the biggest difference, especially reducing highly processed, heavily packaged and canned products.

Again, the study was small and very controlled, so it does not prove that these changes improve long-term health. But it does show that plastic exposure is not completely out of our hands.

You do not need to remove every piece of plastic from your life. A few practical swaps around food storage, packaging and preparation may still make a meaningful difference.

TLDR: A week of fewer plastic touchpoints, a measurable drop in plastic-related chemicals. You don’t need to declare war on Tupperware, a few smart swaps go a long way.

The thread through all of this is that the body is constantly leaving clues. The most interesting part of these studies is not that they have all the answers. It is that they open up better questions.

And that’s really the whole point of reading research like this. Not to chase certainty, but to get a little better at asking what’s actually going on.
