Content That Caught My Eye...

Four very different stories caught my attention last week, yet they all pointed to the same theme: women’s health is far more interconnected than the neat box that mainstream health tries to put it in.

We like neat labels. Clear categories. One symptom, one explanation, one fix.

The body, however, appears to have missed that memo.

So here are the four things that caught my eye last week.

PCOS has a new name

PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) is being reframed as PMOS: Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.

And honestly, this makes sense.

The old name put a lot of attention on “cysts” and ovaries, even though many women with PCOS do not have true ovarian cysts at all. What they often do have is a much bigger endocrine and metabolic picture: insulin resistance, androgen excess, irregular ovulation, fertility challenges, cardiometabolic risk and a very real psychological burden.

No, a name change will not magically fix delayed diagnosis or poor care. But language does matter and is a step in the right direction. When a condition is named after one ultrasound feature, it is easy for the bigger picture to be missed.

TLDR: This may help move PMOS out of the “period and fertility problem” box and help clinicians recognise the metabolic and hormonal pathways often involved in people with PMOS.

Your body likes a sleep rhythm

There appears to be growing evidence that when we sleep may matter just as much as how long we sleep.

A large UK Biobank study used wearables to collect data from more than 60,000 adults and found that people with more regular sleep patterns had a lower risk of all-cause, cancer and cardiometabolic mortality. The interesting part was that sleep regularity appeared to be a stronger predictor of mortality risk than sleep duration alone.

These studies are observational, so they do not prove that irregular sleep directly causes disease. But they do add weight to something that feels biologically plausible: the body likes rhythm.

This does not mean everyone needs a 20-step bedtime routine or a panic attack because you went to bed late on Saturday. But it does suggest that boring consistency may be underrated.

TLDR: one of the simplest longevity hacks may be a regular wake time, morning light, and fewer huge swings between weekday and weekend sleep.

Your gut bacteria may be recycling estrogen

A study out of Yale on the gut microbiome and estrogen caught my attention because it adds another layer to how we think about hormones.

Researchers looked at the estrobolome, which is the collection of gut microbes and genes involved in estrogen metabolism. Some gut bacteria can “reactivate” estrogen that the liver has already packaged up for excretion, allowing some of it to be reabsorbed back into circulation.

The study identifies industrialised populations may have a higher estrogen-recycling capacity in the gut microbiome. This suggests estrogen regulation may be shaped by more than ovaries and liver function alone.

Diet, fibre intake, antibiotics, microbial diversity, environment and modern lifestyle may all be part of the hormonal conversation.

TLDR: Our hormones are not floating around in isolation. The gut may be one of the places where the body decides how much estrogen gets cleared, and how much gets another lap.

Eggs are an energy story too

This one sent me down a proper rabbit hole.

Mature egg cells (oocytes) are among the most mitochondria-rich cells in the body. Estimates vary, but mature oocytes can contain up to 600 000! Which makes sense when you think about what an egg has to do: complete meiosis, organise chromosomes, support fertilisation and help power the earliest stages of embryo development.

In plain English: Ovarian eggs need a lot of energy to do their job. As they age, that energy system can become less reliable, and that may affect egg quality.

This directly challenges the idea that ovarian ageing is only a passive fertility countdown clock.

TLDR: the ovary is not passive. It is metabolically active, energy-dependent biology. And that makes ovarian health feel less like a timer running out and more like a system worth understanding.

The more I read, the more obvious it becomes that women’s health deserves better than isolated symptoms and one-liner click bait summaries.
